Know about Epithelid cells
July 5, 2011 6:46 am Health and FitnessMicroscopically the two distinguishing features of Crohn’s colitis are transmural inflammation and fibrous thickening of the bowel wall. This is due initially to submucous edema but later to extensive fibrosis. The inflammatory exudate consists of lymphocytes, often with prominent follicle formation; plasma cells; and sarcoid like granulomas. Fully formed granulomas consist of collections of epithelioid cells, multinucleated giant cells predominantly of the Langhans type, but without any caseation. These granulomas are an important diagnostic feature when present but are not found in 20 to 25 percent of cases that otherwise fit the classification of Crohn’s colitis.
