Protecting My Idea

I just had the best idea for a new invention, and I want to make sure that I get a patent so that it is protected and nobody else can make money off of it. I just need to make sure that I have developed the concept enough that it is obvious what it is and how it is different from what other people might have proposed. Before I go any further though I want to make sure nobody else has already patented something similar, so I need to figure out how to do a search of patents that have been granted.
